 About Of Sri Lanka

For a small island, Sri Lanka has acquired a lot of names Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, Pearl of the Orient - an accumulation which reveals its richness and beauty, and the intensity of affection which it has evoked in visitors.
This, sadly, is the same island which, for the past 15 years, has been traumatised by a ferocious ethnic and religious conflict that has punctured the most willful exoticism and burned Sri Lanka into Western minds as the Northern Ireland of the Indian Ocean.



 

South Coast of Sri Lanka 

The south cost of Sri Lanka is beautiful and interesting even it is less developed as the West coast. But the charming beautiful beaches, hotels and amazing national parks makes it a paradise.
Galle is a world famous town in the southern cost of Sri Lanka and it is a UNESCO world heritage site as well.

Galle was a main port of Sri Lanka from 14th century. The first fort of Galle was built by Portuguese. Once Dutch captured the fort there were many changers, the current fort was built in the year of 1663. Covering an area of 90 acres the fort still retains its atmosphere of the past.

 

 

Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna is treated as one of the best beaches in the world. The beautiful wide and curved beach offers visitors quit and relaxing place. The place is ideal for safe swimming, Sunbathing and snorkeling.

 

 

 

Koggala, Waligama and Mirissa

Koggala is a small town beyond Unawatuna. The main attraction of Koggala is the “Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum. The Museum is a interesting place with very good collection of exhibits such as traditional dance costumes, kitchen equipments, puppets, jewelries and old carts etc

As you go further from Unawatuna about 23 km you will come to the Waligama town which famous for its beaches. The rest house of Weligama is treated as one of the oldest rest houses in Sri Lanka.

Matara City

Matara is a city located in southern coastline, 160 km away from Colombo and it’s a major town Southern province of Sri Lanka.Matara is famous for its natural beauty, with long stretches of deserted golden beaches with soft golden sand and glistening deep waters, lush paddy fields, and verdant rolling tea estates.

 

   

 

Dondra Point

Dondra means “the city of gods” is located about 6 km east of Matara and is the southern most point of Sri Lanka facing the Indian Ocean.

 


Drive outs from Matara
About 2 km from Matara town you can reach Wewurukannala Vihara which was built in the year of 1960. This temple is famous for its huge seated Buddha stature and it is treated as one of the tallest statures of Sri Lanka which is about 50 meters in height.

Dickwella Rock chimney

You can reach the natural rock chimney which is about 6km east of Dickwella. This is a spectacular site which is a must see place. 

 

  

Tangalla and Mulgirigala

Tangalla is located about 48 km east of Matara town and it is a cam and relaxing place to be. Facing east a freshwater lagoon, the fishing harbour at mouth of the lagoon and the long stretched white sand beach is the ideal place to the western visitors. There are many small guesthouses and hotels along the beach allowing you to have a wider choice of accommodation.



Kalutara

Passing Mt Lavenia, Moratuwa and Panadura you can visit Kaluthara town. The major landmark of Kaluthara is the giant hollow stupa stands on the banks of Kaluganga which houses a smaller Stupa and images of the Load Buddha.

Beruwala
Beruwala is located 60 km away from Colombo and it is popular for the wide beautiful beach and for package tourist crowed.There are many Ayurveda resorts in this area which offers Ayurveda and spa treatments. 

 

Bentota, Balapitiya and Ambalangoda

Bentota is located 62 km from Colombo and south of Beruwala. Bentota also offers different types of accommodations ranging from delightful boutique hotels to villas etc. Another important feature of Bentota beach is that it offers plenty of water sport activities.

Hikkaduwa 
Hikkaduwa is located About 100 km from Colombo and it one of most popular beach resort of Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa was once popular for its astonishing Coral Sanctuary and glass bottomed boat rides on this beautiful Sanctuary. The beautiful coral garden is killed mainly because of the “Elnino “effect and the human activities.




Hill Country Atractions

 Victoria Park

Victoria Park was established in 1897 as for the jubilee of Queen Victoria in completion of sixty years on here thorn. During the summer the park is filled with colorful roses and various flowers where you wont be able to see them in any other city of Sri Lanka.




Gregory Lake
Gregory Lake is located about one kilometer away from Nuwara Eliya town and built during the year 1874 by the governor Gregory.






Hakgalla Gardens
Hakgalla Garden is located along Nuwara Eliya ~ Badulla road (along Kandy~Ramboda) This place is 5581 feet high from the sea level. It is said that the King “Rawana” used this place as a herbal garden.






The largest tea bush of Sri Lanka
 
This word famous tea bush of Sri Lanka is 44 feet (13.4 meters) wide. This was planted in the year of 1840. This tea bush is located in the 7th division of “Gonapitiya tea estate”. 


The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the most beautiful places to be. The view of the surrounding mountains and tea estates will give you the best Golf playing experience. The facilities include Accommodation and Restaurant
 



The first Tea factory of Sri Lanka and Games Tailor museum

Games tailor is the introducer of tea to Sri Lanka during the year of 1867. To commemorate Games tailor there is a small museum created in the “Lulkadura estate” with the items he used

Horton
Horton plane is located 24 kilometers away from Nuwara Eliya. With a 7200 feet elevation above the sea level this national park covers an area of 7000 achers. It was inlay known as “ Mahaweli plane” . During the time of British governor “ Roboat Vilmat Horton” he named it as Horton plane.




Waterfalls of Nuwara Eliya
Lovers Leap Fall

This breath taking water fall is located at Hawaeliya. Cascading from a massive rock this is 30 meters (99 feet) from height. This water fall is so much live during the rainy season.

St Claire Fall
This waterfall can be seen along Avissawella- Nuwaraeliya road. This is 80 meters height. This is the widest and one of the beautiful waterfall in Sri Lanka.


Devon falls
This is one of the beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Situated in the Nuwara Eliya District. The name is given as the falls is in the Devon Estate. It is 97 meters in highest.

Aberdeen Falls
Aberdeen Fall is situated in Nuwara Eliya district. This water fall is 98 meters in height. in the Kehelgamuwa mountain range. Nilgaruda Stone

How to reach:
Travel to Ruupana junction passing Nuwara Eliya , Raagala via Udupussalawa. From there you have to travel on foot

Udawalawa National Park
Sri Lanka is famous for its natural beauty and wildlife. The Magnitude of bio diversity found in Sri Lanka has led to rank Sri Lanka as the 10th highest in bio diversification present per square area






Yala National Park
Stated about 309 km from Colombo Yala National Park is treated as one of the most premier tourist destination of Sri Lanka. 






Boondala National Park

Bundala National Park is located about 250km south east of Colombo in Hambantota district.





Wesgamuwa National Park

 Wasgamuwa National Park is located in Matale and Polonnaruwa districts









Horton Plains

Horton Plain National park is situated about 200 km away from Colombo falls within the Nuwara Eliya district. 








Gal Oya National Park
Gal Oya National Park is situated 314 km from Colombo in Inginiyagala district.








Mineriya National Park

Do a jeep safari in Minneriya National park. The park covers an area of 8,889 hectares giving home to 160 species of birds about 25 species of reptiles, 26 fish species,09 amphibians and more than 78 butterfly species. The park is ideal place for elephant and leopard watching.
